Please Sign Our Open Letter…Now!
The on-going scandal of Mgr Basil Loftus’ columns in both the Catholic Times and Scottish Catholic Observer is worsening. He is increasingly blatant in his attacks on Catholic Faith and Morals and is personally nasty in his remarks about orthodox prelates – Cardinal Burke is one victim. In response to readers’ concerns, we have composed an Open Letter to the two Bishops with responsibility for this priest, since they have ignored our private letters. Please click here to read this letter, and to sign.
Whether or not you disapprove of the work of Catholic Truth is irrelevant. Take this opportunity to join us in publicly defending the Faith against the increasingly ferocious attacks by Mgr Loftus in the Catholic print media. Thank you – God bless.

Please send the link to our Open Letter far and wide. We must do our best to gather as many signatures as possible.
Monsignor Loftus has been allowed free rein in the so called Catholic newspapers, where, if a letter of concern or criticism is published at all, he is given the right to reply, often right there on the same page, same edition, so that, instead of correcting his errors, the editor is allowing him to reinforce them by responding (with baloney) to his critics. He uses bullying tactics (two priests threatened with legal action for their temerity in daring to criticise his writings) so it’s time the bishops – who have ignored all concerns expressed to date – were brought to account for their negligence and forced to take action without any further delay. We will send our letter with signatures appended in due course. Let’s make sure that there are just too many signatures for them to ignore. Over to you!

Dear Editor
The “Click here to sign” link is not working for me. What to do?
Summa,
That’s puzzling because it seems to be working for others – in any case, the click here sign leads to a prepared email, so if you just email me with your name and anything else you wish to include (qualifications or job title, for example), that will be fine. Email, editor@catholictruthscotland.com
Many thanks.
I have been attacked personally by Loftus in the past during his forays into the Catholic blogdom. It is almost a prior mark of Election to Heaven to be attacked by a clear heretic such as Loftus. Still, he’ll be dead before too long I would guess, as he is the archetypal old hippy Vatican II fogey.
That the responsible Bishops don’t exercise their authority in defence of the Faith against this article is par for the course in the post-Vatican II Church: liberty for all (except Traditionalists).
I have nothing but contempt for all of them.
Benedict,
Thanks to all who have submitted their names for inclusion in the Open Letter. We will get them online as soon as possible this morning.

Editor,
A very good letter. Let’s hope it puts a stop to this wayward cleric once and for all.
Athanasius,
Hear, hear.
Thank you Athanasius. The signatures are coming in steadily – I’m very pleased with the response so far.
Editor,
It is a good response so far, all right, but where are all the names that were on those other open letters, the ones about next October’s synod? Why are they not signing up? Where are all the priests who should be very concerned about this priest being allowed to attack dogma in the newspapers they are selling in their churches. Don’t they care about their parishioners reading his dangerous articles?
Also, people who have written in to the papers to complain about Mgr Loftus and who must see that their letters haven’t been taken seriously. Why are they not signing the “Truth” Open Letter?
I hope it’s not pettiness, which I hate to see happening when one group vies with another to be superior. That is unchristian.
It’s a very good letter, so there is no excuse for anyone not signing it if they are genuinely interested in defending the faith.
Fidelis,
You are so right! Where are the ones who claim to be worried and saddened by the happenings in the Church?
I agree, the open letter is a very good one, it is not bitter invective, nor is it the blustering hype typical of the Voris crew, so there is absolutely no reason for any one genuinely interested in defending the Faith to sign it.
😳 I meant there is absolutely no reason for anyone genuinely interested in defending the Faith NOT to sign it 😳
Dear Editor
I’ve e-mailed you to please add my name as I can’t do it from the link.
Many thanks.
Therese,
Done and dusted. I think you may have missed the note underneath the main link which actually gives my email address (editor@catholictruthscotland.com) – that opens up an email in Outlook Express, as does the main “click here to sign” link.
Anyway, mission accomplished and you’re up there with the best of them!
Many thanks.
Editor
I have just read the letter, having been away most of the week. I have tried to sign but my name hasn’t yet come up.
Is it too early for my name to appear or have I been too late in signing?
Sorry, Frankier,
I’ve been out most of the afternoon and only now managed to post the latest arrivals – so many that we’re now onto page 3. You will be on page 2, I think.
Sorry about that – when I’m around, I can respond to the “ping” (email alert on top volume!) fairly quickly and post them as they come in, but today I was out on various errands of mercy (!) and so they piled up. I will not be near my desk for much of tomorrow morning, either, but be assured, folks, I’ll post the signatures online as soon as I see them.
I’ve had one reader asking when the letter will be posted to the bishops. We haven’t decided that yet, but we can safely say that the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, 13 May, will be the absolute deadline. I’m finding that people who are not online are keen to sign when they learn about it, so please tell your family and friends that it is perfectly legitimate to send their “signatures” (i.e. give permission to add their names) via online contacts.
Here’s a fantastic resource from the Latin Mass Society website – Dr Joseph Shaw has compiled a dossier on the articles and letters of Mgr Loftus, with key quotes and from the little I’ve read so far (time being of the essence!) it is terrific. I look forward to reading it all asap. Click here to read…
That dossier is really very good. I’ve sometimes read Loftus articles in the Catholic Times but those letters from other places are an eye opener. I sincerely hope the Open Letter does the trick and he is silenced. The damage he is doing is incalculable.
If the bishops have ignored private letters, as it says on the website intro to the Open Letter, why will they pay any attention to an Open Letter? I don’t mean to put a dampener on it, and I hope it has the desired effect, but I am cynical. I don’t think the bishops care what we think. As long as the papers keep selling, that’s all they will bother about.
I have some reasons, going way back, for believing Bp. Marcus Stock to be a kind and courteous gentleman, and not averse to tradition. His time as Secretary to the Bishops’ Conference might have changed him, but I hope it hasn’t, and that he will see that Mgr. Loftus should be parted from his vitriolic pen ASAP.
Please note that despite our sitemeter recording almost 2,000 visits to our website last week alone (we usually get around a 1,000 or a bit more/1200 or so) there are still less than 300 signatures on the Open Letter. It’s hard to imagine that so few Catholics visiting the site are moved to do something as simple as sending an email with permission to add their names to the list. Some, at least of them, clearly dislike or hate Catholic Truth more than they love the Faith. That’s sad.
I will be removing the letter on the 13th to send to the two bishops, so if anyone has not yet signed or can alert friends and family to it who may wish to sign, now’s the time, folks.
