Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord…

Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord…

From the Gospel of the day…
At that time Jesus appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and He upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen Him after He was risen again. And He said to them: Go ye into the whole world and preach the Gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptised shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned… And the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God…  (Mk 16:14-16;19)

Thanks for those mass times Editor.

(I will go to the 7pm IHOM mass, as the timing of that means I can see our baby daughter for a bit before she goes for her bath and then bed.)

For the benefit of anyone reading in Edinburgh, mass times in that City are:

SSPX – St Margarets & St Leonards (Newington): 12.30pm

FSSP – St Andrews (Ravelston): 6pm

Happy Ascension Day to all. Sadly the feast has been transferred to Sunday here which feels all wrong, indeed IS all wrong in my opinion.

Happy Feast of the Ascension to all!

Fortunately, you’ll see no moving of the Feast to Sunday in the SSPX! Deo Gratias!

Happy Feast everyone! I just love these devotional threads. Makes me feel part of the Catholic family. It’s what is missing everywhere else. Even the traditional chapels have no feel of a parish life about them, so thank you for this!

Pleasure, Josephine. Methinks it’ll be a while before there is any true Catholic parish life anywhere, let alone traditional chapels.

Anyway, glad you like the devotional threads – me, too. I love them!

Come to Corpus Christi in Ireland if you want to feel part of a parish! We are fortunate in that we “gel” well together and have been through some tough times with “Resistance” folk. But they’ve gone away now… Hope you all had an enjoyable feast.

        Spiritus,

That’s good to hear. I’ve sent you an email – seems you have paid twice over for your conference tickets so will you answer my email. When I receive your postal details, we will refund you the overpayment.(Unless you’re going to demand entry twice, of course 😀 )

      Crofter Lady,
I don’t think I can either (sorry Ed. I’ve lost your little lesson about it – I know ‘gimme strength’).
Here’s another try, but I wish it were a dog rather than a cat (maybe it IS a little dog!)

      http://cdn.crossmap.com/images/1/94/19438.jpg

On Sunday I couldn’t hear (as usual) the announcement about the Ascension Day Mass, and the SSPX Mass times site had gremlins in it so I went at 11.00 which was the old time for feasts. It was all like flag day in Aberdeen (v old xenophobic remark that we sassenachs used to get away with once upon a time), and so I phoned my sister and found I was an hour and a half early. I’ll definitely have to get an ear trumpet to hear announcements and sermon in our chapel.

I always giggle when the Paschal Candle is extinguished on Ascension Day – naughty, but I can’t seem to help it because it reminds me of a hilarious battle between a traddie altar-server and a PP one Ascension Thursday some years ago. A very dear, orthodox old priest (RIP) used to celebrate the old Mass once a month, and was always willing to let other traditional priests celebrate Mass in his beautiful little church. However, he saw nothing wrong with the NO, which he celebrated strictly, and with no EMs, no ‘sign of peace’ and Holy Communion was distributed to kneeling communicants on the tongue. On this particular day he had said his NO Mass and extinguished the Paschal Candle before the old Mass, so, of course, our altar server lit it again for our Mass. Out comes Father, and blows it out, back comes server and lights it again, and so it went on, while the congregation were reduced to helpless fits of giggles. I can’ remember clearly who won, but I have a feeling we did.

I think I’ve worked it out. Here’s one I’m testing

    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ik6U4QSeSfY/VSCqhPxfkQI/AAAAAAAAE90/-MNAOc7-Wxo/s1600/funny-meaning-of-life-5.jpg

I was told to Google jokes about heaven, then pick one and click on it, and it takes you through to see it on another page with a few other pictures to the right. Above that it says “visit page” and “view image”. You click on view image and see the picture you’ve chosen and nothing else. You then copy that link from your browser. I’ve just tried it, so now I’m going to click “post comment” to see if it works! LOL!

I found these quotes from saints about the Ascension. They were on a website with a meditation I was reading but I don’t think it would be appropriate for this blog, as was in the form of asking questions but not giving answers.

    Quotes from the Saints

“Christ is already in that place of peace, which is all in all. He is on the right hand of God. He is hidden in the brightness of the radiance which issues from the everlasting throne. He is in the very abyss of peace, where there is no voice of tumult or distress, but a deep stillness–stillness, that greatest and most awful of all goods which we can fancy; that most perfect of joys, the utter profound, ineffable tranquility of the Divine Essence. He has entered into His rest. That is our home; here we are on a pilgrimage, and Christ calls us to His many mansions which He has prepared.” -Venerable John Henry Newman

“Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth. For just as he remained with us even after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies.” – St. Augustine

“I answer that Christ’s Ascension is the cause of our salvation in two ways: first of all, on our part; secondly, on His. On our part, in so far as by the Ascension our souls are uplifted to Him; because…His Ascension fosters, first, faith; secondly, hope; thirdly, charity. Fourthly, our reverence for Him is thereby increased, since we no longer deem Him an earthly man, but the God of heaven; thus the Apostle says (2 Corinthians 5:16): “If we have known Christ according to the flesh — `that is, as mortal, whereby we reputed Him as a mere man,’” as the gloss interprets the words — “but now we know Him so no longer.” On His part, in regard to those things which, in ascending, He did for our salvation. First, He prepared the way for our ascent into heaven, according to His own saying (John 14:2): “I go to prepare a place for you,” and the words of Micheas (2:13), “He shall go up that shall open the way before them.” For since He is our Head the members must follow whither the Head has gone: hence He said (John 14:3): “That where I am, you also may be.” In sign whereof He took to heaven the souls of the saints delivered from hell, according to Psalm 67:19 (Cf. Ephesians 4:8): “Ascending on high, He led captivity captive,” because He took with Him to heaven those who had been held captives by the devil — to heaven, as to a place strange to human nature. captives in deed of a happy taking, since they were acquired by His victory. Secondly, because as the high-priest under the Old Testament entered the holy place to stand before God for the people, so also Christ entered heaven “to make intercession for us,” as is said in Hebrews 7:25. Because the very showing of Himself in the human nature which He took with Him to heaven is a pleading for us. so that for the very reason that God so exalted human nature in Christ, He may take pity on them for whom the Son of God took human nature. Thirdly, that being established in His heavenly seat as God and Lord, He might send down gifts upon men, according to Ephesians 4:10: “He ascended above all the heavens, that He might fill all things,” that is, “with His gifts,” according to the gloss.” – St. Thomas Aquinas

“But you will say, How does this concern me? Because you also shall be taken up in like manner into the clouds. For your body is of like nature to His body, therefore shall your body be so light, that it can pass through the air. For as is the head, so also is the body; as the beginning, so also the end. See then how you are honored by this beginning. Man was the lowest part of the rational creation, but the feet have been made the head, being lifted up aloft into the royal throne in their head.” – St. John Chrysostom

Thank you to John Vennari for this one (who claims that the best stories come from Ireland):

Father O’Malley was delivering a fiery sermon on the Four Last Things. So impassioned was his oratory that the walls were shaking, the windows rattling, the parishioners looked about nervously, wondering what would happen next. Suddenly Father stopped and asked “How many of you want to go to Heaven? Stand up!” Every single parishioner stood up. Father continued, “Sit down, please. And how many of you want to go to Hell? Stand up!” No one stood, but after a brief moment, Flanagan arose and stood alone. Father O’Malley glared down at Flanagan in disbelief: “Are ya really tellin’ me, lad, that you want to go to Hell?” Replied Flanagan, “No Father, but I didn’t want to see ya standin’ up there all by your lonesome!”

    Happy Feast Day everyone!

      RCA Victor,

Priceless. I heard a slightly different version, of a teacher in class being the victim of “I didn’t want you to be on your own!”
