3/9: Feast of Pope St Pius X…
Joseph Sarto was born in Riese in Venetia on Jun 2nd, 1835. He was successively curate, parish priest, Bishop of Mantua, patriarch of Venice. He was elected Pope on August 4, 1903. As chief pastor of the Church he realised to the full the value of the liturgy as the prayer of the Church and spared no effort to propagate the practice of frequent and daily Communion. In his encyclical Pascendi Domini Gregis, he exposed and condemned the modernist heresy with force and clarity (1907). He died on August 20, 1914 and was canonised on May 29, 1954. (From 1962, Missal, Feast of St Pius X, Pope. Confessor)

Happy Feast day, of this great pope saint.
I just can’t help thinking how shocked Pius X would be to see this short film of his successor

That’s totally shocking. What a contrast this pope is to Pope Pius X. There’s just no comparing them.
Happy Feast of Pope St. Pius X!

Damsel,
I liked your post for today’s feast.
I thought the article in Crisis magazine was really excellent, about Pope Pius X, so I copied this part which is exactly what we need today in the Church:
The Reforms of Pius
In his opening encyclical, E Supremi apostolatus (1903), Pius X claims that the program for his pontificate is “to reestablish all things in Christ” so that “Christ may be all things and in all.” To his fellow bishops, he states that all other tasks must yield to “forming the clergy to holiness.” For that reason the bishops’ seminaries must be the “delight of their hearts.” He had specific reform plans for the seminaries, including residency requirements, discipline and curricula. Within a few years of his pontificate, he issued the Apostolic Letter Quoniam in Re Biblica (1906), in which he outlined a systematic program for biblical instruction in seminaries. Among other things, he maintained that a course in sacred scripture should be incorporated into each seminary year. Shortly before his death, in the wake of the Modernist controversy, he issued the Motu proprio Doctoris Angelici (1914), in which he manifestly insisted on Thomistic philosophy being the foundation of theological studies in all Catholic educational institutions. http://www.crisismagazine.com/2013/pope-st-pius-x-the-great-reformer
A happy Feast to everyone.
Happy feast, bloggers.
Roll on Pope Pius 13th!
There’s a new film at the Venice festival with Jude Law as a young Pope Pius XIII. Not sure that is quite what you have in mind Margaret! Said to mirror the contradictions in the Church!…..
Elizabeth
No, that’s not what I had in mind – LOL! I was thinking that the next pope should be the same saintly type as Pius X and so he might choose the same name which would make him Pius XIII! I suppose it would be too good to be true!
Rorate Caeli has posted a couple of videos of Bishop Fellay talking exclusively about the Prelature offer.
For the Record: Bishop Fellay explains what has been offered to SSPX by Rome and what Prelature will look like
The videos were recorded in a conference in the United States on August 24, 2016. The main points are in the two videos below, especially the last one. We do not add comments, but let the declarations stand as they are.

Sorry for duplicating this post on general discussion Laura, I have asked Editor to transfer any comments, appearing over there, to this thread. The videos are quite something (so far, I have only seen the ones concerning Romes offer to the SSPX).
Sorry, I meant to post all 6 videos separately

Sorry, I meant to say that on Rorate they had only two videos but when you click on them they show all the talks separately, at least I think that’s it. I haven’t watched them all yet, so I hope I’ve not cluttered up the blog with the same video over and over – LOL!
Thanks for posting the videos Laura but unfortunately the sound quality isn’t very good so I gave up trying to listen to them.
Laura,
Thank you for posting the videos. I’ll check them out at some point tomorrow.
Happy Feast day everyone. Pius X was a wonderful saint and I voted Yes in the website poll, he should be made a Doctor of the Church for explaining to the world what Modernism actually is.
I agree how shocking that video is. Oh, for having a Pope again like Pope Pius X. Words just fail me whenever I hear whatever Pope Francis is spouting.
Happy Feast day everyone. This link from Catholic Family news about Pope Pius X fought against liberalism. A big difference between him and the current Pope.

A belated happy Feast day to all. St. Pius X is indeed a great saint for our times, the Pope who exposed so eloquently the deviant spirit of Modernism. He foretold this present crisis in the Church long before it took hold in the high clergy.
That video of Pope Francis is nothing short of appalling. To hear a successor of St. Peter, the Vicar of Christ, praising “mother earth” like some pagan worshipper leaves is truly beyond the pale. The question that has to be asked is: what on “mother earth” possessed the Cardinals in conclave 3 years ago?
Athanasius,
You are dead right about Francis latest fad (nature worship).
Recently he said Catholics should go to confession for not recycling or using too much paper or plastic (embarrassing).
But before he said we didn’t need to be specific or even say anything at all in the confessional – even the act of physically entering the confessional was suggested as being sufficient to obtain forgiveness and actually speaking to the priest was unnecessary.
Gabriel Syme
I wasn’t aware that the Pope said what he did about Confession. He’s absolutely dead wrong on that score for it is a requirement for absolution that a person confess his sins audibly to the priest, even if the priest were Uri Geller’s twin brother!
This Pope is the strangest phenomenon ever to sit on the Chair of Peter. He seems to no grasp of the Catholic Faith whatsoever.
Athanasius,
“This Pope is the strangest phenomenon ever to sit on the Chair of Peter. He seems to no grasp of the Catholic Faith whatsoever.”
Hear hear!
I was talking with our Prior this morning after Mass about these +Fellay videos – esp. #5 and #6. He said there was really nothing new about this Personal Prelature proposal, that’s it been on the table for several years. However, what is new is that, as His Excellency states, the SSPX is no longer alone in criticizing the modernism that has obscured and devastated the Church, and the errors in the VII documents. And, that the requirements laid down by Pope Benedict are no longer being held over our heads.
Our Prior speculated that if a deal is struck, it may well cause a split in the Church, so sharply divided are the orthodox and modernist camps. His Excellency touches upon that as well, referring to the “fight” that will ensue if we are regularized.
Come to think of it, if the SSPX is indeed regularized, and a Pope performs the Consecration, I’ll bet the only bishops who will obey that command are the orthodox ones. Those infected by the Kasperite disease will surely go off and form their own “churches,” full of poison in their veins…and ignore the Pope’s command.
RCA Victor,
If there’s nothing new in that offer, which looks great to me, why hasn’t it been accepted years ago? If the Society is to be left to go along “as is”, except with an SSPX bishop appointed by the Pope to liaise with the Vatican when necessary, why the ducking and diving? I am actually quite shocked to learn that this “as is” offer has been on the table for years – it should have been accepted and I hope it is now, before people like me lose sympathy with the Society.
Fidelis,
Because of the conditions attached to its acceptance by Pope Benedict…as well as the conflicting signals received by Bp. Fellay from different Vatican personnel.
RCA Victor,
I’m afraid I’ve still not seen the videos (sick bed etc. poor me, hope I live…) so I really don’t know the situation but let’s hope and pray that this really is a breakthrough, and that Bp Fellay et al feel confident in accepting it because it would be really helpful in answering those, like the people I encountered recently, who called the Society priests “wolves”. They, those, them, would I love to see with egg splattered faces, naughty moi!
Go to our bed, wummin. I hope you are better soon XX
I really don’t know the situation but let’s hope and pray that this really is a breakthrough, and that Bp Fellay et al feel confident in accepting it
Editor,
In his discussion, when referring to the offer which has been made, +Fellay states that (I paraphrase) we could not expect anything better.
So, it seems like the deal ticks all the right boxes from an SSPX perspective.
The Bishop says his caution at this time is simply prudence to verify everything which has been said / offered is indeed true.
RCA Victor has already mentioned the last-minute conditions imposed in 2012, which wanted the Society to accept V2 – so I think +Fellay is going through everything with a fine-tooth comb, looking for any unacceptable add-ons relating to endorsement of non-Catholic positions.
At one point, he astutely notes that “they need priests” – hinting at a concern which is doubtless helping drive things from the Vatican side of things.
His observation here is especially true in France, the SSPX heartland, where the novus ordo Church is rapidly going down the tubes, just like the protestantism it mimics.
Although a very prudent man, I think the Bishop is quietly optimistic as he states that, if things proceed satisfactorily to conclusion, he thinks that this could represent the beginning of the end for Vatican II.
After all, what young man with a calling from God would choose a homosexual-ridden, heterodox diocesan seminary, if he had the option of a canonically regular SSPX to join?
(Of course, many men have had the vision and courage to join the SSPX anyway, during its years of having an irregular status, but a resolution to this matter will undoubtedly open the flood gates and increase that number).
Gabriel Syme,
That is all very encouraging indeed. I’m afraid I’ve still not had time to watch the videos but I am delighted to read your comment to the effect that this is, all other things being equal, “a done deal”.
Please God that is the case. Then, maybe some time soon, we can hope for a bigger church in the archdiocese of Glasgow. Forced to go out at one point during Mass yesterday, for some water to ease my poor tortured throat, and not being made of sufficiently heroic material to offer it up, I was astonished to find almost as many people in the church porch as in the church itself. Incredible.
So, roll on the great day of regularisation. Let’s hope and pray that it is now close… at least, within the foreseeable future.
I’ve now listened, with difficulty due to the poor sound quality, to all the +Fellay video tapes. They are superb and very encouraging although I must admit that reconciliation makes me a tad nervous! It has to happen one day but, before it happens, I think the fury of hell will be unleashed, not least in the form of disobedient bishops.
I sincerely hope that the Scottish bishops get to know about these talks and hence make the TLM more accessible. I was shocked to hear that the bishop of Aberdeen told the the traditional monks on Orkney that he “had no work for” them in his diocese. What a dereliction of duty! He brazenly deprives some of his flock of the sacraments when the supply of same is within his authority.
Crofterlady,
“I was shocked to hear that the bishop of Aberdeen told the the traditional monks on Orkney that he “had no work for” them in his diocese. ”
I am also shocked to hear that. What right has he to deny the Mass to those who want it in Aberdeen? You’d think that having lived in a Benedictine monastery, Bishop Gilbert would know better and BE better but apparently not.
Laura, he, the bishop, allows a monthly Sunday Mass in Aberdeen and, wait for it, a THREE MONTHLY weekday (!) Mass in the north isles even though the monks offered to say a monthly SUNDAY Mass following the Aberdeen one.
He definitely said that to the monks (about “no work…..”) because we heard it from the horse’s mouth.
Editor,
I found this very astute analysis of the Personal Prelature offered to Bishop Fellay. You may find some of the points disturbing, especially regarding Archbishop Pozzo’s proposal being opposed by Cardinal Müller, with Pope Francis seemingly in the middle acting as puppet master over both.
No wonder Bishop Fellay is being ultra cautious.

Herewith a condensed version of Bishop Fellay’s talks which has good sound quality:

Apologies to everyone; the above video is one from last May not the recent one of 24th August. No doubt this will be available in a more user friendly format soon.
This just in from Vox Cantoris

Gerontius,
I’m not sure it’s as straightforward as “follow the money” but it makes an interesting read.
A strange list of blogs at the Vox links heading I’d never heard of most of them and only visited the first one “Mahound’s Paradise” – I just couldn’t make any sense of it at all, so gave up! LOL!
Nicky, thanks for comment. Yes I agree, it’s not just about money, there’s much more going on here on a far larger scale. Have you heard of “The House Of One”? If not, you will find some disturbing info if you Google it. See URL for starters/

Didn’t Bishop Fellay say recently that we (I paraphrase here) might have to wait for a more traditionally minded Pope? Bishop Fellay doesn’t trust “them” and with good cause. If it seems to good to be true, then it probably isn’t. We shall see. However, I’m sure Our Lord will protect his remnant Faithful.
Gerontius,
That VC article strikes me as grasping at straws. The assets of the SSPX are a drop in the bucket when compared to those of the mainstream Church. I seem to recall another “grasping at straws” article they wrote recently on the regularization topic as well.
That said, in my opinion, this is not a reliable website for another reason: they link to Fr. Paul Nicholson’s blog. Remember him? That alone completely discredits them in my eyes, in general, and in particular, regarding their far-fetched ruminations about the SSPX.
RCA Victor,
I agree, the mainstream church doesn’t need the SSPX assets, but if it gets hold of them and consequently controls them, then the society would be in grave danger.
Thanks for the heads up about VC which has been duly noted – Iv’e only just come across them.
Similarly, Iv’e never heard of Fr. Paul Nicholson – who’s he, and what’s he said or done? Maybe something happened before I started posting here, which I hope explains my ignorance.
Gerontius,
Fr Paul Nicholson was extremely nasty about Fr Nicholas Gruner when Fr Gruner died suddenly – on the very day of his death, RIP.
Click here to read one commentary on the matter.
Gerontius,
I see Editor beat me to the main objection about Fr. Nicholson (and here we thought she was in bed with a bad cold!), but there are two more:
1. He is Michael Voris’ spiritual director.
2. He is an SSPX-hater (thus a second source of Voris’ smear campaign against us, in addition to the deep pockets of one Terry Carroll) who tried to convince his listeners that the Society is guilty of “the germ of heresy.”
Say what, Father?
Agreed about the Society’s assets, but I’m sure that is already one of Bishop Fellay’s concerns…

I hope that this link works.
That link is a duplicate of the one posted by teresa rose on 3rd september.
The link worked! This is a wonderful example of true humility (the content of the link, not the fact that I managed to post it successfully!!). Pope Francis eat your heart out! Pope Pius X is my favourite Pope, always was. He has such a kind gentle expression.
Spiritus,
I agree, Pius X is my favourite pope also.
This is very interesting – Fr Franz Schmidberger said that, if the society’s position were regularised, it would still speak out against ‘errors’
Dated 29 April, I missed it at the time.
