Royal Wedding In May 2018 – But Why?editor
Over the years, I’ve had invitations to the weddings of various cohabiting relatives and the same question always springs to mind… Why? Why bother getting married when they’ve already been living as husband and wife, sometimes for years. I don’t get it.
Different if they have come to their religious senses, and want to put their situation right for, literally, God’s sake, stop living in sin and so on, but that’s not usually the reason, in my experience, and it doesn’t appear to be the reason in the case of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
This thread, then, is to discuss two things: firstly, the rise in cohabitation, despite the fact that the statistics should discourage any thinking person from doing so. The discussion is not for the purpose of either promoting or attacking the monarchy. I’m sure we’re all well aware of the correct charitable Catholic disposition which should permeate such a conversation and I don’t expect anything to the contrary. But here’s a “just in case”…. any unpleasant remarks directed at members of the Royal Family, those who support the monarchy or those who do not, will be deleted the minute I see them. Stick to the topic – not the inspiration for it, which is the current widespread news coverage of the forthcoming royal wedding – the formal marriage of two people already cohabiting – that is, they are living together effectively as a married couple…
Secondly, it has been announced today that Meghan Markle will be baptised and confirmed (Church of England) before the wedding. Isn’t that to trivialise the already discredited C of E in the eyes of the world, only too ready to mock all things Christian, however nominally Christian? Much has been made in the news reports of Meghan’s “independent” mind and spirit, a very modern woman, so should we assume that she has had a sudden conversion experience or should we apply to her, the words of the famous convert to Catholicism from Anglicanism, G.K. Chesterton: “Somehow one can never manage to be an atheist.” 😀
