17/03/18: Hail, Glorious Saint Patrick!
I cannot allow the Feast of my patron saint to pass without marking it, so I wish everyone, bloggers and readers, A very happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
As always with devotional threads, feel free to post relevant comments, stories and jokes, favourite prayers and hymns… As well as the above rendition of the hymn to Saint Patrick, I’m posting the lovely Irish hymn to Our Lady of Knock… Enjoy!

Happy St Patrick’s day to everyone on the blog!
I love Irish dancing so I thought I’d post this short video of some dancers. I hope you all enjoy it as much as me.
Lily,
I also love Irish dancing. As you say, it is so graceful.
That’s a beautiful dance! I love the Irish dancing as well, it’s so graceful, there’s nothing like it.
A very happy feast of St Patrick to one and all.
A very happy St Patrick’s day everyone!
I love the dance, as well. I hope it’s ok to post an “Irish joke” – it’s not meant to be racist, I’m of Irish extraction! This one made me laugh, so I hope it makes others laugh as well.
An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman joined a silent order of monks who had porridge for breakfast every morning. If a monk was really desperate to say something every three years he was allowed to speak one sentence, so after three years The Englishman applied for permission to speak. This was granted and he said with great passion and feeling ‘I HATE PORRIDGE!’
After three more years The Scotsman applied for permission to speak and this request too was granted.
‘I HATE PORRIDGE!’ shouted The Scotsman. After three more years. The Irishman applied for permission to speak and after much deliberation his request was granted.
‘I’m leaving,’ said The Irishman. ‘I can’t stand this non-stop complaining about porridge.’
LOL!
Rose,
I love the joke! I’m just surprised that the Scotsman said he didn’t like porridge, LOL!
I might try to find a joke later – I do love the silliness of jokes! I’m also of Irish extraction so I don’t take offence and I don’t think real Irish people do either, just the PC types which seem to be everywhere these days!
Happy St Patrick’s Day to everyone at Catholic Truth!
I thought I would do a bit of research on St Patrick and found out more detail on this link than I’ve ever read before –
https://www.thoughtco.com/saint-patricks-life-and-miracles-124541
It seems he was born in Wales (not Scotland, as I thought before) and his Guardian Angel appeared to him and his name is Victor!
That makes me wish I knew the name of my own Guardian Angel, as it would make it easier to pray to him, LOL!
I enjoyed the read, so I hope others do, too.
Happy Saint Patrick’s day!
Love the dancing and the joke!
I also love the two video hymns in the intro – they are beautiful.
I think it’s good to pray for Ireland today with the abortion referendum to come. That would be a shocking day for Ireland, if they repealed the 8th amendment to the Constitution. It would be tantamount to a death sentence for unborn children in Ireland.
I have to admit, although I’ve got more Irish blood in me than I’ve had hot dinners, I’ve never really felt any affinity to St Patrick, or the Celtic saints in general. That said, I did name one of my sons Patrick but that was after a special person, not the saint!
Anyway, I enjoyed this account:

Petrus,
I don’t have all that much Irish blood in me but I feel my heart stirring every time I Iisten to the hymn “Hail, glorious St Patrick” – the three tenors singing that lovely rendering of it above, moves my soul, so I’m surprised at your “lack of affinity” to St Patrick. As a full blooded Scot I could say that about St Andrew, but not St Patrick, LOL!
I loved your link to One Peter Five – great stuff.
Now I have to admit I do love that hymn!
I forgot to say don’t forget that “special person” you called your son after, he was probably called after St Patrick, so you can’t use that get-out clause, LOL!
Or she!
So you know a “she” called Patrick?
LOL!
Happy St Patrick’s Day to everyone at Catholic Truth.
I notice there was much more on the BBC this year about St Patrick’s day than I remember seeing before, during the breakfast programme this morning, even some Irish dancing! Maybe they’re trying to sweeten up the Dublin government to make sure there’s no hard border after Brexit, LOL!
Happy St Patrick’s Day to all!
Vatican 11 dumbed down the St Patrick’s prayer. We need all the protection we can muster against Christ’s enemies.
AUTHENTIC TRANSLATION
I bind unto myself today
Through a might strength,
The invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.
I bind unto myself today
The strength of Christ’s birth and His baptism,
The strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
The strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
The strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.
I bind unto myself today
The strength of the love of the Cherubim
The obedience of angels,
The service of archangels,
The hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
The prayers of the patriarchs,
The preaching of the apostles,
The faith of confessors,
The innocence of virgins
The deeds of righteous men.
I bind unto myself today
The strength of heaven;
The light of the sun,
The splendor of fire,
The speed of lightning,
The swiftness of the wind,
The depth of the sea,
The stability of the earth,
The firmness of the rock.
I bind unto myself today
God’s strength to pilot me;
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me,
God’s shield to protect me,
God’s hosts to save me
From the snares of the devil,
From the temptations of vices,
From the lusts of nature
From every one who desires me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a multitude.
I summon today all these powers
Between me and evil,
Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul;
Against the incantations of false prophets,
Against the black law of pagandom,
Against the false laws of heretics,
Against the craft of idolatry,
Against spells of women and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man’s body and soul.
Christ shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that reward may come to me in abundance.
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ in me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the fort, Christ in the chariot,
Christ in the captain’s deck of a ship,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.
I bind unto myself today
Through a mighty strength,
The invocation of the Trinity,
Though a belief in the Threeness,
Through a confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.
VATICAN 11 VERSION
I arise today through
God’s strength to pilot me.
God’s might to uphold me.
God’s wisdom to guide me.
God’s eye to see before me.
God’s ear to hear me.
God’s word to speak for me.
God’s hands to guard me.
God’s way to lie before me.
God’s shield to protect me.
God’s host to secure me:
Against snares of devils,
Against temptations of vices,
Against inclinations of nature,
Against everyone who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear, alone and in a crowd
Christ be with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ in me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me.
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ where I lie, Christ where I sit,
Christ where I arise.
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me.
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me.
Christ in every eye who sees me.
Christ in every ear that hears me.
Salvation is of the Lord.
Salvation is of the Lord.
Salvation is of the Christ.
May your salvation O Lord, be ever with us.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread today. I hope you’ve all enjoyed a lovely Feast.
Enjoy the rest of St Patrick’s day – and we’ll meet here again next 17th March!
