Scotland Declares State of Climate Emergency – What Does This Mean?

Responding to the news that the First Minister has declared a climate emergency [1] Gina Hanrahan, Head of Policy, WWF Scotland said:
“The First Minister is absolutely right to declare that we are facing a climate emergency. Climate change is already everywhere, in disrupted weather affecting farmers here in Scotland, in melting sea ice in the Arctic hitting nature, and in extreme weather such as hurricanes, wildfires and heatwaves destroying lives and livelihoods around the world.
“Politicians from across the spectrum need to work together to lead the rapid and large-scale emergency response that we urgently require. A new expert report later this week is expected to advise a deadline year for ending Scotland’s contribution to climate change. This will need political support for ambitious new targets and accelerated actions to make homes warmer and renewable powered, to support sustainable farming, and to help get polluting fossil fuel vehicles off the roads.” Click here to read more

The calls for Governments to declare a “climate emergency” have been growing since the visit of the 16 year old activist, Greta Thunberg from Sweden, who joined in the ridiculous protests in London recently. We’ve heard of lions being led by donkeys but now we have politicians led by children to add to the “donkeys” image, now well embedded in the minds of voters as we watch the increasing political chaos across the UK, highlighted by the anti-democratic efforts of the Westminster Parliament to overturn the vote to leave the European Union.
However, with all the (crackpot) calls for a state of emergency to be declared, actual practical measures (which is always what we need to deal with any emergency) are in short supply.
So far, the Scottish hierarchy (and UK hierarchy in general) have been either silent or going along with the climate change propaganda but what now – what if the measures brought in to deal with this contrived emergency include, e.g. population control measures? What if Scots are to limit family sizes to say one, two or (if they’re in a generous mood at Holyrood) three children? There is definitely a view around that “unsustainable human population growth… [is] leading us to conclude that we not only need smaller footprints, but fewer feet.”
Should Scots Catholics be concerned about this declaration of a “climate emergency”? And if there are measures proposed which are in conflict with Catholic family life will the bishops publicly oppose them? And would it be helpful if the bishops were to speak out to reassure us all that there is really nothing to worry about, that Our Lord has instructed us not to worry about tomorrow, what we are to wear, or eat, that our Heavenly Father knows our needs and will take care of us… would that be a good contribution to the climate debate from Catholic priests and bishops? After all, if a Christian street preacher wearing one of their “the end of the world is nigh – repent!” wandered into any TV studio during a discussion on the claims that we only have 12 years to sort out the planet or it’s “curtains”, he’d be laughed off stage. Why is David Attenborough any different? Did I miss the “David Attenborough is infallible” announcement?

There’s one thing we can bet on, and it’s that the SNP plans for emergency measures will come at a price for the population – for one thing, the cost of petrol will go up.
There was a report in the Daily Mail last Saturday saying that the SNP’s “eco crusade” will force families to bring their homes up to scratch by buying a new boiler or facing a huge fine. I tried to find it online, but can’t find it. So, it’s already started.
Actually Josephine Our Council is ripping out Perfectly good Boilers in this spending spree . At the moment we get a chance as it’s not compulsory and I have refused it . But if they say it has to go in then al have to go along with it .
Now am going for a Sauna to the Local Swimming Baths where if ever energy was wasted it’s in these Local Authority Lesuire Centers .

As for the young lady she should be more aware of The Religion of Peace than the Climate Change expert that she professes to be. Sturgeons climate waffle was just her typical grandstanding, trying to take the spotlight away from the paucity of her progress to independence.
Its the usual pattern for scottish politics – politicians organised some contrived action (“school strikes” for the climate) then use this as a vehicle for their own agenda, while claiming to be responding to public concern.
I think the climate lobby’s exploitation of Greta Thunberg – a young girl who suffers from Apergers Syndrome, OCD and selective mutism – is despicable. With her conditions she is someone prone to becoming obsessed with issues and clearly prone to being influenced She is not someone capable to taking a questioning view or of communicating (asking questions) well.
I believe someone with her conditions has been selected as a pawn, as to see a young girl with these challenges becoming prominent causes an emotional response in people, they will be less likely to question or decry her, instead naturally wishing to support her. She has even been nominated for the nobel peace prize, as part of the theatre. There is an obvious desire to influence the young also.
If anyone does ask awkward questions, then she can always fall back on her selective mutism. She would make a good politician in fact!
Ultimately, I am yet to be convinced there is anything amiss with the climate. Throughout my lifetime, regular warnings of “doom in 10 years” have been issued, starting in the early 1980s and continuing regularly until now.
None of these prophesies come true and so I am skeptical of the climate lobby, regarding them as having the same credibility as the zany protestant man who often wrongly predicts “the rapture”. If he is a laughing stock, I don’t see why climate scientists are not also.
Like anything, the climate lobby should be judged on its record, and it has a long history of scandals, mis-judgments and failed predictions. Some examples of the latter:
In 1982, the UN – Mostafa Tolba, Chief Exec of UN Environmental Program (UNEP) – said “ the world faces an ecological disaster as final as nuclear war within a couple of decades unless governments act now.”
In 1989, the UN – Noel Brown, UNEP boss in New York – said entire nations would be “wiped from the map” if global warming was not reversed by the year 2000.
In 2001, the IPPC UN report said that climate change would mean no more snow. Wrong. By 2012, it said climate change was responsible for more snow than ever.
In 2007, Ranjendra Pachauri – chief of UN IPPC – said 2012 was the new disaster date and “what we do in the next 2 or 3 years will determine our future”.
In 2007, “scientists” in the US said that arctic summers would be ice-free by 2013, as reported by the BBC.
In January of this year, 2019, Democrat Senator Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed the “world is going to end in 12 years” if we don’t address climate change.
It is a disgrace and shows how gullible and unthinking people (and especially secular people) are, that this continues.
I am particularly angered to see weepy teenagers on the news, bubbling about being “the last generation”. I do not know which I have greater contempt for, their extreme gullibility or their lack of backbone. How the climate lobby gets away with terrorising simple people in this way, I do not know.
Sturgeon and her ilk are only interested in this as a means of taxation anyway – such as the recent proposals to charge people for parking at work. And so I do not think they would attempt to enforce strict lifestyle conditions – not that our oxygen-thief Bishops would oppose them anyway.
Sturgeon should be asked why she is so pro-immigration, given increasing population can only increase Scotland’ consumption and carbon footprint. When you scratch the surface, you see how many of politicians priorities are in fact conflicting, which must mean some of them are only for show.
Climate activists should also be held to account, even if they sincerely believe here is a problem, why target a nation like the UK which has an excellent record of addressing, emissions, recycling etc?
Why are they not in places like China, which regularly opens new fossil fuel power plants etc?
The whole thing is a nonsense in my opinion – the invented problems of over-privileged people with nothing to else to worry about.
I will say that if the nice sunny days Scotland has enjoyed this year (and last) are the results of global warming – then bring it on!

I say this with no sense of satisfaction, but one of the reasons why population control measures will not be necessary is that around the globe the overwhelming majority of couples are voluntarilly choosing to limit the size of their families by means of artificial contraception.
The global fertility rate average (number of lifetime births per woman) is currently about 2.3 and still falling. This is roughly the replacement level required to mainitain the current population. If the fertility rate falls further then the global population wuill begin to decline.
Contrary to popular myth, the fertility rate in almost all of the world, including most of what we used to call the Third World is well below three, and the rate is falling fastest in poorer and middle-income countries where the standard of living is rising fastest. Addis Ababab has a lower birth rate than London. (Look it up if you don’t beleive me.) The evidence shows that as child mortality falls, and incomes rise, people have fewer children. The present cotinued rise in global population is almost entirely due to longer lifetimes in midlle income countries, where due to improved health and nutrition people are living longer than ever.
The UN population “experts” believe global population will only ciontinue to rise for around another twenty years, before entering sustained, steady decline.
It is this fall in population which is likely to make most of the proposed climate control measures unncecessary.

Don’t get me wrong – I totally agree that the reality is a lower population but the way I hear these conversations, it’s as if the politicians and climate “experts” really don’t want any people around on the planet except themselves! I think they really want to decimate the world – or am I being melodramatic?

For the avoidance of doubt I do not agree with Rosing’s value judgements. He clearly state that he believes artificial contraception is a good thing. However his analysis of the data is impeccable. Worldwide female lifetime fertility rates have fallen largely due to artifical contraception.
He was also unafraid of the political correctness crowd, pointing out for example that the AIDS problem in Africa is due to promiscuity. (Although he uses the less judgemental sounding word “concurrency”.)

In fact, our common sense should tell us that female fertility has fallen due to the use of artificial contraception, which is why you will never hear me advocating IVF – my sympathy for those “longing” / “desperate” to have a child (after years of blocking the possibility) is somewhere between 0 and minus 0. There is a very good short video here on the AIDS crisis in Africa, where Rosling states that promisuity is the problem. It should be pointed out for those that don’t know that Professor Rosling was by far the most famous and celebrated figure worldwide in statistics and global health during the 2000s. He was extremely well regarded by the statistical world and had for many years held a professorship at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, which is the orgainsation which awards the Nobel prize for Medicine. He was definately not just some random crank.

What this entire industry is revealing – exactly as the industries surrounding “LGBT+ rights” and other ideologically driven movements have revealed – is the almost total collapse of critical thinking among the UK population. WOW! I haven’t been in touch with Mike Willis for years, but I have been a guest in his home – he and his wife have always been, certainly when I knew them – very pro-life and pro-family activists. They have a beautiful family and this must be a terrible blow.

I just started studying “global warming/climate change.” I made this post on Patheos/Discus in response to someone concerned about global warming. It was marked as spam and not published:

3) People prefer warm climates to cold climates.

Absolutely spot on! The entire climate change myth is about making money. Once they get the people to believe the propaganda they can then tax them to death and make their lives miserable in so many other “environmentally friendly” ways! People really are sheep.
I’m glad you noticed the switch they made from global warming to climate change, a switch necessitated by people asking why it was getting colder, not warmer.
Ultimately, climate change is the doctrine that has come to replace Christianity in an increasingly pagan world. Having rejected the divine Creator the masses now worship the natural creation. It’s a return to the old pagan worship of Gaia, mother earth. Such blindness!

yes, it’s sad to see Churchmen leaving the supernatural life behind to worship mother earth. They clerly have no faith any longer in the Creator.

Could it not be that these churchmen are just trying to obey the Biblical injunction to steward the earth, and look after the planet’s resources. Surely, that shows faith in the Creator and obedience to his wishes for us to people the earth and look after it.

I would be inclined to accept that if they were otherwise men of supernatural faith who put the salvation of souls before all else. Alas, however, they are complete worldlings who only care about the planet because they are of the world. Their fruits say all that needs saying about them.
In the 60s/70s era, every time there was a budget, a hike in taxes on income, tobacco, petrol, booze, betting etc. was almost guaranteed.
I often heard my dad (+ R.I.P.) asking ….’why don’t they just give us all a pill – and get rid of us’….
We appear to be edging ever closer to this.
