Italy: Cardinal Burke Dubbed “Enemy of the Pope” – Insulted, Humiliated…
Behold the Church of bridges and mercy, open and outreaching! Cardinal Burke is forced to annul a Mass in Ostuni: the parish priest had demanded the celebration be held behind closed doors as his arrival in Brindisi displeased the high levels of the diocese. The newspapers attacked him as an enemy of the Pope. The Bishop of Ostuni however, will tomorrow meet with the Valdese in church to talk about immigration.
Here we see the Church of mercy, the Church of open ports and the Church of out-reach. So open, so merciful and so out-reaching, that clandestine Masses are reserved for troublesome Cardinals. It is happening in Ostuni, Puglia as in China, where, according to the Vatican Chancellor, Sorondo, the Social Doctrine of the Church is applied.
The latest Brindisian newspapers present us with a very disturbing sign concerning Cardinal Leo Burke, who was politely shown the door in that sordid and humiliating way only the prevailing clericalism is capable of. “The conservative Cardinal is not welcomed by the priests”, were yesterday’s headlines in the Quotidiano di Puglia: Annulled the American high-prelate’s Mass scheduled in the Cathedral. The parish-priests had expressed embarrassment after his position against Pope Francis…

…This episode throws a sinister light on the increasingly political way things are run in the Church. Cardinal Leo Burke is not impeded canonically; he travels the world for conferences and moments of spirituality; he celebrates Masses, is involved in pastoral activities; he leads moments of prayer between the United States (where he was recently for the March for Life) and Italy. He was even a guest recently for the Nuova BQ Day. The idea that a priest, supported certainly by a bishop, can close the doors on him, is an indication of how grave the situation not only in the Church has become, but also of the restricted freedom those men of the Church, that the mainstream doesn’t like, are subjected to, because they are considered enemies. Is this the communion they want to impose by dint of dialogue? Are these the shepherds with the odour of the sheep and a knife between their teeth? Click here for the entire “must-read” report.

Matthew 5: 11-12: Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven.
Margaret USA,
Hear, hear. That is God’s own promise to Cardinal Burke, and others like him. Thanks for the reminder.
You’re welcome. ☺
That is a total disgrace but it is good that it was the Cardinal himself who cancelled the Mass, so the troublemaking priests only won a partial victory. I copied two paragraphs that I think are very important:-
” But what the local papers didn’t write is that the decision to suspend the Mass, not annul it, was made by Cardinal Burke himself. As the Nuova BQ was able to piece together from sources close to the American Cardinal, it was Burke who decided to cancel that meeting in the Città bianca del Salento, organized at the invitation of some business men. The motive? The parish-priest of the Cathedral after conceding the use of the church, communicated the condition sine qua non to have the Cardinal’s Latin Mass held privately. This meant that only the organizers would have been able to attend. That is to say – a Mass behind closed doors. Or if you like – a clandestine Mass. At that point Burke ruled it out.
In the agitated undergrowth of telephone calls and curial activity in fact, when they knew of the arrival of Burke and that the prelate, in addition, would be celebrating the Mass in the Extraordinary Form, panic broke out. The “dreaded” and “dangerous” Latin Mass, the same Mass that bothers greatly the local Bishop, Domenico Caliandro, who has opposed Tradition with all his might and the local movements that had wanted to celebrate the Mass according to the Motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum. So the parish priest opposed his veto, certain of the benediction from the offices in the Episcopal Palace. A veto, however, that Burke, who is not infected by leprosy or the Coronavirus, decided not to accept.”
It goes on to say that the Cardinal shook the dust from his feet, as instructed in the Gospel. What else can you do when faced with such unbelief? The whole thing is a disgrace. It’s not as if Cardinal Burke is a hard-core “traditionalist” – he just offers the traditional Latin Mass, that’s all. He goes along with all the rest, speaking out only at the time of Amoris Laetitia, and then went silent again.
The persecution of sound priests is well under way. By the way, that article calls the cardinal “Leo” when his name is “Raymond”.
Helen,
Cardinal Burke’s name is actually both – Raymond Leo Burke (born June 30, 1948) – which makes ME a couple of days older than the good Cardinal!
I was baptized and confirmed the day Pope Paul VI issued the Credo of the People of God which was ++Burke’s 20th birthday (June 30, 1968). ❤
And Blessed Vasyl Velychovsky went to his eternal reward June 30, 1973 – ++Burke’s 25th birthday. ❤❤❤
What disgraceful treatment of Cardinal Burke.
It is disappointing to see that the Italian Episcopate is every bit as rotten as it is elsewhere.
The local Bishop in whose diocese this occurred, Domenico Caliandro, was one of the consecrators of Bishop Marcello Semeraro.
Semeraro in 2014 issued a letter disseminating lies that Catholics who attend SSPX masses are automatically excommunicated.
So you can see, the Italian Bishops are obviously a cosy cabal of anti-tradition modernists. And so +Burke’s treatment is hardly a surprise.
Both Caliandro and Semeraro were ordianed in 1971, in the wake of Vatican II and so – like so many others of that priestly generation – they are Vatican II fanatics who attack tradition at every turn.
This is obviously because they simply cannot accept the reality that their life as Vatican II priests and Bishops has been to the great detriment of the Church.
These men are of a similar age to Cardinal Burke and clearly resent him as he – and his traditional masses – is a walking reminder of what they seek to forget.
But these Bishops are now near the end of their careers and lives, men in their 70s, their time will pass and hopefully they will be replaced by true Catholic Bishops.
Gabriel Syme,
I agree with you that Cardinal Burke’s treatment is hardly a surprise, appalling as it is.
You are so right about these bishops being near the end of the careers (and they are careers not vocations, obviously, such worldly men) but how they are to be replaced by “true Catholic bishops” is hard to see given the spread of modernism among the clergy. Only the consecration of Russia will change things.
Yes, the Church has become political – but not any garden variety of political. This is the way leftists intimidate, attack, silence and punish their enemies. The French Revolution, the Bolshevik Revolution, Hitler’s rise to power (the Nazis were socialists), the Deep State against Donald Trump: all the same tactics.
To paraphrase what Cardinal Ciappi said of the Third Secret: the Communist takeover begins at the top.
That said, I wish Cardinal Burke would be more in-your-face about his resistance to the Dictator Pope.
RCA Victor,
I do agree that Cardinal Burke could do with being a bit more “in your face”. I still think that might happen soon.
Laura,

(And be sure to look at the video of the Pontifical High Mass in New York City!)
RCA Victor,
Many thanks for that link – I’ve copied the short video clip because it is a “must-see” and for those who may not click on the link, I say – please take a few minutes to watch this and listen to what the Cardinal says: And listen to what the lovely little altar boy says – “out of the mouths of babes…”
The only people who look bad in that report are the priests and their bishop who made the cardinal so unwelcome.
These are the same hypocrites who bleat on about the need to welcome migrants. These are the men, the ordained, we’re supposed to respect?
Is there really Any Surprises here . Cardinal Burke is a Catholic, most of these Apostates only dress up as Catholics and I include Francis in that statement. Am certainly no Saint but I know right from wrong and I don’t need to be told by some Mealy Mouthed Priest. Bishop. Cardinal. Or Pope . That what was the Law for at least 2000 Years is now more or less in one Mans Hands . Cardinal Burke should and Probably will shake the Very Dust off his shoes as he leaves.
I totally agree with everyone here – the priests and bishop who abused Cardinal Burke in this way are a scandal. But we can’t be surprised I also get the point about the hypocrisy of banging on about welcoming migrants when they don’t even welcome a member of the household of the faith. Real hypocrites they are, a real disgrace.
Speaking of Cardinal Zen and my post above linking to his Pontifical Mass, I recall reading at some point last year that this whole corrupt, despicable China deal was made because the Underground Church in China was persistently attached to the real Mass, and therefore that this deal was a way to squelch that devotion. Put them under the thumb of the fake Chinese Patriotic Catholic [sic] Association, and voila! The problem disappears.
A ruthlessness reminiscent of the destruction of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate.
And how appropriate: the purveyors of the fake Vatican II Mass and the fake Vatican II religion – halfway between the Faith and heresy – betray the Chinese faithful to a fake “Catholic” Church!
The masks fall; this incident shows what they really are!
Nothing has changed since Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani was interrupted during his speech at the opening of the Council…
The cause is finally heard.
Lionel,
Well said!
