Scottish Government dragging its feet on easing lockdown is an abuse of power…
Whatever the truth of the threat we face from coronavirus, it is always worth bearing in mind that the way science is understood and used is often determined by the prevailing political and cultural norms. For example, one of the key political trends of the past two decades has been the rise and rise of what is called the ‘politics of behaviour’.
The politics of behaviour is a New Labour invention. It has been adopted by all the political parties but is most wholeheartedly embraced by self-proclaimed ‘progressives’. Developed as a form of micro-politics that obsesses about little things, it is also a form of politics that has infected the regional assemblies most of all. If you want to know what will be banned next, it is always advisable to check out what’s going on in the Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Parliament. This helps to explain why up here in Scotland, the baby steps we are taking out of the lockdown are even more babyish than in England.
One could argue that Scotland has had a ‘lockdown’ culture for some time. When it comes to locking or clamping down on what we can say and do, Scotland leads the way. Whether it is criminalising words, trying to stop people from smoking or drinking, or attempting to make us eat ‘correctly’, the Scottish government has been at the forefront of attempts to limit the freedom of the public and to ensure that we all ‘behave responsibly’.
Take the recently proposed hate-crime bill – a bill that goes much further than England’s counterpart in attempting to criminalise words. Indeed, if passed in its current form, it could lead to preachers being arrested in churches for reading ‘incorrect’ sections from the Bible. Scotland was also first to criminalise even the lightest smack. It also notoriously attempted to give every child in the country a Named Person – essentially a state guardian, to oversee their every need – until the Supreme Court ruled this to be illegal.
With such an attachment to the politics of behaviour, it is no surprise to find that the Scottish government is dragging its feet on easing the lockdown. Underpinning this form of politics is a patronising distrust of the public and a tendency to want to over-regulate what we do in our daily lives…
The emergence of the politics of behaviour, nudge policies, awareness raising and so on represents a change in the way that a key section of the modern elite engages with the public. It helps, in part, to explain the relentless way in which the ‘Stay Home’ message has been used and abused over the past two months. It also helps to explain why Scotland is clinging on to this mantra while England tries to move on.
At a time when the spirit, the will and the initiative of the Scottish people are needed like never before, it is time to demand that the government stops telling us how to behave and allows us to start acting. Comment:
There is no doubt at all that the Scottish Government under Nicola Sturgeon is determined to keep us in lockdown as long as possible. The question is, what can the public do, in practical terms, because the majority of Scots are not, by nature, given to rioting – at least not without a good few drams of “the hard stuff” – and I, for one, don’t drink! So, how to get out of this false imprisonment? There is absolutely no evidence that the lockdown is necessary – it wasn’t necessary, in the first place. But now? Not remotely.
Is just ignoring the restrictions the right thing to do, live our lives as fully as possible, and not allow ourselves to be turned into little obedient servants of the State? Or would that be the wrong thing to do? Writing to MPs isn’t achieving anything – my letter received the usual automatic acknowledgment but nothing more. We’re being played for fools. How should we to react? Or is there no “should” or “ought” – is it more a case of we “may” or we “might” do this or that? Or, back to square one, should we simply wait until the Government gives us more permissions, and be thankful for them, no matter how limited, how “babyish” the steps to the new normal – which is really a future with very limited freedom.
Is the Scottish Government abusing its power? I definitely think so – but do you? Share your thoughts – while you are still free to do so…

Wee Jimmy Crankie is a Marxist and trying to screw as much money from Westminster as possible hence the delay in lifting lockdown.
Who is “Wee Jimmy Crankie” ? If it’s your personal nickname for Nicola Sturgeon, most people won’t know what the heck you mean.
Where have you been Hiding Josephine. At least 90% of The Population will know what Ruddy means and I include the Primary kids in that percentage. Sturgeon is a power Mad we wummin who it’s plain to see is a Meglomaniac . She also is a dangerous one at that. Some of the so called Laws that She has brought out especially concerning Children have been of the Diabolical. The one thing though that really surprises me is that She’s not wanting the LGBTQ2WXYZ mob to walk in those Horrible Pride Things. After all if it’s good enough for The Blacks and Young White Idiotic Marxists to Congregate in their 1000s to trash the Country. Then surely it’s good enough for the Homosexuals and their Cohorts to March .
Talking of Marching . I suppose that the Orange Parades will come out in Force next Month for their Annual Bash The Catholics Main Parade. They of course always keep their Social Distance in case they Kick the Person walking in front in them .
FOOF,
Whether people know what is meant or not, it’s not fitting to name-call anyone in such a way – this is a Catholic blog, although trying to keep it that way is turning out to be an uphill struggle. Nicola Sturgeon’s record speaks for itself, there’s no need to be silly about it; although some mild “name calling” (based on a wee bit of working round her name, such at “Stalin” 😀 ) may fit into the “you’ll get away with it” category, in the context of a particular discussion about tyrannical government. Going over the top by comparing her to the idiot Crankies is a bit much and wasting precious time. I notice that the people who do this sort of thing, don’t make any meaningful contributions to any of our discussions which is why they’re not going to be allowed easy access from now on.
Once I work it out that someone is using the blog for their own ends, I wake up. Prepare, therefore, for battle!
I definitely think the Scottish Government is dragging its feet in easing the lockdown because it’s been a tyrannical government from the start.
The author of the article obviously has his finger on the pulse – dictatorial legislation of every sort has been introduced – or in the case of the failed Named Person Scheme – tried to be introduced, to keep as tight a hold as possible over us all, as individuals and families.
I detest the Scottish Government although the people I meet don’t. Most are fooled by the “independence” rhetoric, grandstanding about being an independent nation, even though the international organisations are not likely to welcome us as members.

Sturgeon is trying to build a reputation for herself as a strong leader but I don’t believe she means anything she says. I don’t watch the daily coronavirus updates any more because I just can’t stand her phoney sincerity when she talks about the need to stick to the rules so we can get ready for the “new normal”. As someone else said on this blog a while ago, she is tailor made for the role of a tyrant. God help us all.
Once Alex Salmond is finished with her and her partners in crime, and I mean crime, she will soon disappear from the scene. The fact that Salmond was found not guilty of the charges against him will make it all the more difficult for her.
Maybe this is why she is prolonging the lockdown.
Frankier,
That’s exactly what I think. She knows her days are numbered and she’s hanging on to her job as long as possible. Too bad that means the rest of us are stuck at home.
Sorry for being off topic but I thought I would mention that the LGBT++++++ flag was flying strongly in the wind when I passed by the Catholic church in Prestwick yesterday. If I had access to a set of ladders I would have delighted in cutting it down. I genuinely thought that the virus would have made many in the Church, especially the clergy, examine their conscience but how wrong I was.
Frankier,
I won’t delete your comment but please try to stay on topic. There’s always the General Discussion for anything not covered on the topics listed on the sidebar. Anyone who wants to comment on your post, should go to the General Discussion thread. As I hope you will do to tell us the name of that Catholic Church as I’d like to contact that priest without delay. Please and thank you.
Mzzz Sturgeon isn’t the only person cut out to be a tyrant in Scotland 😀
Now, Frankier, as your punishment, please go and search for the situation in Japan apropos the virus and lockdown, and tell us if you think Nicola
StalinSturgeon has anything to learn from Japan…When you’re ready…
The lockdown was constitutionally unlawful to begin with, it was a long-planned suppression of freedom and economic destruction (emanating from China) that under any other circumstances would have resulted in the overthrow of the governments of the UK by the people. That’s why the fear factor came into play through the media, terrorising the ignorant masses into surrendering their civil liberties and even destroying the economic future. It was the greatest con ever unleashed on humanity and one day that will be revealed.
The entire Coronavirus panic and lockdown has been manufactured by Marxists in all countries via the media to bring about massive geopolitical changes that will see China emerge at the end as the world’s dominant power. Of course Sturgeon is a Marxist and is playing her part to the full, even overplaying it now because she knows Alex is just waiting to bring her down.
I will never understand how so many people fell for this Communist plot against Western civilisation, the facts were there from the start screaming “FAKE PANDEMIC”, yet no one paid attention. Now they have a really disastrous future to look forward to and it serves them right for closing their eyes and ears to the truth.
What should we do?
Well, I’m meeting more and more people who are hinting that they’re not keeping to the rules at all, and it’s not difficult to see why.
Neil Ferguson and then Dominic Cummings plus half a dozen other notables didn’t bother to keep them so why should we? If the very man who was responsible for insisting on the lockdown in the first place didn’t think they were important enough to keep himself, why should the rest of us bother?
I’ve heard of some people who really haven’t kept the rules from the start. It’s all about taking risks, I suppose. If you’re a bit of a scaredy cat like me, you’ll think twice. I’d be sure to be caught first time! LOL!
Lily
Let’s face it, there’s nothing we can do other than hope in God and in Our Lady’s promise. These evil people are having their moment right now but heaven is watching and their time is limited. We have the comfort of knowing that in the not-too-distant future Our Lady is going to trample Satan and his cohorts under her foot. Until that happy day, which I suspect is coming very close now, we can only stick with our prayers and do the best we can to expose the plans of Communists and Freemasons against the Church and all of human society.
Athanasius,
Well you’ve changed your tune – I remember you ticking off someone in the queue at one of the shops, saying his son or daughter, forget which, who was a doctor, was being well paid for his “heroism” in dealing with the virus, LOL!
I think you were absolutely right and I think we should all make our voices heard to protest this nonsense.
I’ve printed off the leaflet on the Catholic Truth website and given it out to a few people who were sympathetic to hearing an alternative view, so that is the sort of thing we can all do – not so sure about blatantly breaking the rules (yet!) but I’ll soon be very open to the idea – and I’d support any hairdresser who is open to the idea – I started off with a short bob and now look like some teenage pop star with locks down to her knees, LOL!
Half the time the Government is either breaking its own rules or changing them. Here’s the latest one – goodbye to the two metre rule.

Fidelis
I wasn’t referring to our individual efforts to expose the con of Coronavirus and the lockdown, I was pointing out that in real terms we can’t do much to change the course of corrupt governments. Sorry of that wasn’t clear.
Fidelis
I forgot to add that if you manage to knock some sense into your hairdresser, possibly by highlighting how much money a wise hairdresser could make while all the idiots lie low, then do let me know and I’ll be there in the queue for a long-needed cut. I presently look like a savage!
Imagine the populations of free democratic countries allowing Marxist governments to inflict this kind of evil totalitarianism on them. It’s really hard to believe there are so many stupid people out there, sheep right enough!

The lead article puts considerable flesh on the bones of a comment I made previously, about the disturbing inroads socialism has made in Scotland. In fact, this quote from the article could simply be summarized as “socialism in action”:
“Underpinning this form of politics is a patronising distrust of the public and a tendency to want to over-regulate what we do in our daily lives…”
(That might qualify as the understatement of the year!)
Meanwhile, Editor, I would like to point out, in Frankier’s defense, that the LGBT movement – aka the “tolerant and diverse crowd” – is squarely in the same camp as your petty dictator. Government control of our lives from cradle to grave includes, after all, politically correct control over speech, freedom of association, religion, the workplace…
In short, if you’re not “diverse,” as the Satanic Rainbow demands, you’re an enemy of the state.
(I will now beat a hasty retreat before Editor’s rolling pin falls on my head, like Maxwell’s Silver Hammer…)
RCAVictor
Scotland, tragically, has been Communist for many decades, right back to the time of the “Red Clyde”. It’s terrible to admit but the country which Pius IX once called “the dearest daughter of the Church”, has turned into a Marxist prostitute.
RCA Victor,
Of course you are right about the “tolerant and diverse” nonsense but we’ve had a multitude of threads on that topic – this is different. Frankier appears on here only occasionally, and invariably makes up his own rules. But, ye know what, Vic? Sometimes I wonder if there’s any point in bothering to keep order – the same thought, I imagine, that is going through the heads of the police in London today, facing opposing demonstrations and lots of fighting… What IS the point, they must be asking themselves. Me, too…
The obvious answers (as in this case, trying to keep a discussion on topic for clarity and to avoid confusion and conflating issues) don’t seem obvious to others, so, what’s the point, I sometimes ask myself?
https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b3/c7/6e/b3c76ee99420eabd85982de56cbdf39c.jpg
Do I look like I actually want stupid answers to my obviously rhetorical questions? Really? 😀
I forgot to respond to the thread question: yes, the Scottish government is obviously abusing its power. But it’s even worse than that: it has usurped power which it does not have, so this is an abuse of power acquired both legally and illegally.
I think at this point we could adapt the old saying, “power proceeds from the barrel of a gun,” as follows:
“Power proceeds from the needle of a syringe.”
Meanwhile, what about the Scottish bishops’ abuse of power? Have they become just another department of the State?
RCA Victor,
The bishops don’t have any power or authority, as is evidenced in the way they are sheepishly (excuse the pun) obeying the State, closing churches and then telling everyone to obey the State as well. They even beat the State to it, by offering to close the churches! You couldn’t make it up. Notice none of the businesses did that, just the bishops.
Fidelis,
I wonder what the Bishops are doing for money these days?
RCAVictor
No doubt pawning the family silver!
Athanasius/RCA Victor,
Nope. They’re still asking for money on their various websites. Even though there are no public Masses anywhere, there are very public notices giving bank details for the numpties who will (for some unfathomable reason) feel obliged to keep their priest(s) in the style to which the rest of us would just love to become accustomed.
Gimme a break!
Dear Editor,
Yes I fully agree with this brave academic. It would be interesting to monitor his career progression after going public with the obvious logic of his position.
Now Dear Editor, a wee quibble.
I think you and a few others, while expressing justifiable annoyance with the Scottish hierarchy over this House Arrest and their lack of outrage with which I agree (the annoyance) – I must object to your comment “keeping the priests in the style to which the rest of us would love to become accustomed”
I find that a sad un Christian aspersion on the many lonely isolated pastors who are giving their lives to furthering God’s kingdom.
Never mind if we disagree with their version of celebration, they are far more worthy of our understanding and support than all the other free loaders who are swanning about on the tax payers dime and getting paid for doing nothing.
I have not read of any guvmint scheme to feed the clergy.
Am on my way to the bottom of the stairs.
Patrick,
That’s fair enough. My comment was really tongue in cheek – I’m sure none of the clergy is really living in the style to which I, personally, would love to become accustomed.
I have extremely high standards which include words like “luxury” and “lots of chocolate” and “fresh cream cakes” and “steaks” and “new car” and… well, you’ll get my drift 😀
So, thank you for highlighting my lack of charity.
Since revenge is a dish best served cold, I won’t say anything more…. for now … 😀
Dear Editor,
Please Miss, can I come down from the naughty step now?
Patrick,
Without delay! We miss you!
There would have been no need of a lockdown if they hadn`t lumped every hospital under the same roof. This wouldn`t have happened 30+ years ago when Infectious disease, maternity, childrens` and geriatric hospitals sat in their own safe areas well away from each other. Working on these projects, we often discussed what would happen if a fire, explosion or a so-called terrorist attack happened. Now we know. In no way should coronavirus patients have been anywhere near vulnerable people.
I have yet to hear any of the “experts” question this.
Frankier,
Very true. Indeed, some of us have asked why the new temporary hospital in Glasgow, built to take the huge number of expected Coronavirus patients (which never materialised), wasn’t used for that purpose to leave the other hospitals free of Covid patients, as far as possible.
Instead, the NHS has all but come to a stand-still in Scotland with operations cancelled or postponed; once we get the statistics for those who died of non-Covid deaths, including those who died possibly or likely due to their treatment/operation being cancelled, I think there will be lot of surprised faces on the doorsteps where the hand-clappers used to pay their tributes to the NHS “heroes”.
There’s plenty of questions that the “experts” haven’t answered, not least because the answers keep changing, as with the latest news that the 2 metre social distancing rule is about to be scrapped.
I wonder if we’ll ever find out the cost of all the instructions and signs painted on the ground and so on. Must be costing a fortune.
I remember working on many new school projects and they were, supposedly, designed for times of emergencies to be easily converted into hospitals. The excuse for the Royal Yacht was that it was to become a hospital ship.
As soon as their lockdown started, empty hotels could have been requisitioned, especially near airports, and allowed incomers to go straight into quarantine and local games halls and community centres could also have been utilised. Instead, even for the slightest sniffle, we were asked/told to self-isolate at home rather than go to a doctor. We were told to use tissues, bin them when finished and then double wrap them in plastic bags before putting them (throwing them out the window ?) for the binmen. Do they think everybody in the country has bags of tissues and plastic bags in their bedrooms ready for an emergency?
In my younger days, we used to have mobile x-ray units come around the villages to fight TB. Surely it shouldn`t be too difficult to have mobile testing units doing the same job.
Again, in those days, living in a valley surrounded by (six) coal mines and many other associated industries, three, only three, doctors managed to cope with continuous accidents as well as the other, everyday illnesses. They even pulled teeth and dispensed their own medicines. A chemists is where you went for toothpaste if you had any teeth left. Even our parish priest rarely left the area in case he had to go down the mines to administer the sacraments. Now they are hiding away from a virus which, as you rightly say, seems to have wiped out all other illnesses including HIV
At least, if we break a leg now, we can be comforted by the fact that we won`t need to go to the doctor. It will heal itself after ten days.
We always get told not to look to the past: I think it is now the time to do just that, we might learn something to our advantage.
Frankier,
It’s funny, I was saying only today when I got into a very short conversation with a young person, that we thought things were better now than in the “old days” but we were obviously very wrong! At least we didn’t need permission to go out for a walk! So, I agree with you, we should look to the past to learn something to our advantage – I’d say we could learn a lot.
Editor,
I totally agree with Dr Waiton’s assessment – although I’d like it to be even stronger, and calling for the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon because she is deliberately trailing Westminster in order to look like she’s a strong leader. She’s anything but, IMHO.
I was reading around about Dominic Cummings and found a very good article by Peter Hitchens, which is packed with good, thoughtful information about the lockdown, including the facts about Japan which are sometimes mentioned in passing on news programmes but never properly explained. No wonder, Here’s what Peter HItchens has said:
“But, most striking of all is Japan, which last week ended a less than half-hearted ‘state of emergency’, roughly as mild as Sweden’s policy.
Yet this highly urbanised, crowded nation with a population of 126 million and several enormous cities, has recorded fewer than 1,000 Covid-19 deaths.
All kinds of explanations have been offered for this happy outcome, and you may make of them what you will. But a tight shutdown cannot possibly be one of them.”
https://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/2020/05/peter-hitchens-sack-dominic-cummings-for-his-wild-midnight-ride-to-durham-only-if-you-want-a-longer-.html
We really are being played for fools by being kept in this state of lockdown – a word used in prisons, never heard it used anywhere else before this policy was enforced.
I’m getting more and more angry about it. There’s no concern shown for social distancing when mobs take to the streets, as they’ve done across America and also in London, Glasgow and Edinburgh (that I know about – there are probably plenty more) for their various causes. Yet, I’ve heard stories of people being ticked off in a queue for the supermarket for not standing right where they’re supposed to stand in the line. I hope nobody tries that with me because they’ll get an earful !
That’s another thing, I was noticing only yesterday out for my walk that everybody looks unhappy. People edging past me on a path, looking nervous and annoyed, no smiles. It’s unbelievable how the fear strategy has worked.
To answer the topic question – yes, I definitely believe that Nicola Sturgeon has abused her power and the sooner she’s gone, the better life will be for us all.
I fully agree.
What Stuart Waiton is actually identifying in the UK generally and in Scotland in partuicular is the totalitarian nature of Socialism (Communism by any other name). Look at any Communist country, past or present, and it’s always the same, i.e., erosion of human freedom, State spying on citizens, anti-Christian/anti-family laws and financial deterioration. In fine, as the Popes have warned so many times in the past, Communism bankrupts countries both financially and morally, taking away all freedom in the process. Socialists always promise people heaven and always deliver hell.
Athanasius,
I think you are right about Dr Waiton – he has identified the totalitarian nature of the Socialist Government in Scotland, definitely.
It’s surprising that Nicola Sturgeon has turned into such a tyrant, because she comes from a working class background, so you’d expect her to want better for everyone, including her own family.
Lily
Sometimes the ones from working class backgrounds are the worst, they get a little power and money and it goes to their head. I think we can say that’s Nicola Sturgeon’s problem, she’s drunk with a sense of power and has never had so much wealth from the taxpayer’s pocket available for her personal use. She go the way of all other despots, which is to say she’ll destroy herself or be overthrown by an equally godless rival.
Athanasius,
Interesting point.
It is always sad to see someone keen to be in a position of power.
We should pray for Nicola Sturgeon – to abuse power or influence or to hold any position of power in a prideful way, is to put oneself in very serious spiritual danger.
Editor
I agree, but Nicola Sturgeon sadly doesn’t recognise the supernatural order and it would take a miracle for her to convert. Mind you, greater miracles have happened so worth the prayers.
I’ve decided to re-name the virus “COVERT-19,” since it qualifies as a sneak attack on civil liberties. As for what to do to resist, I haven’t really had any opportunities other than to pray, but I’m always on the lookout for an opening (pun intended).
RCA Victor,
No! No! You’ve got it all wrong. This is a miracle virus – it’s made every other illness disappear, including the seasonal flu.
I can remember a time when people died of other things – heart attacks, strokes, accidents, various cancers, but not any more! They’re all gone! Once we’ve stayed at home long enough to conquer Covid-19, we’ll be able to relax and live forever!
Editor,
“We’ll be able to relax and live forever.” – That is, until one of Bill Gates’ vaccines finishes us off. But hey, maybe our bodies will be so full of toxins that we’ll all be incorrupt! A new path to sainthood!
(Except for Nicola Sturgeon, that is, who will probably excuse herself from vaccination)
I was surprised to find this article in the Remnant Newspaper tonight from Christopher Ferrara. He is in the process of filing and prosecuting major litigations against the Governor of New York, New Jersey and the Mayor of New York City.
https://remnantnewspaper.com/web/index.php/articles/item/4932-christopher-ferrara-represents-priests-rabbis-sues-de-blasio-Cuomo
It is also surprising that he is representing both the Society of Saint Pius X and Orthodox Jews who seem to be the only ones prepared to be willing plaintiffs, challenging the lockdowns through the Courts.
This was not something that I ever expected, or, thought could happen. Yet, who knows how all this will pan out going through the Courts system. Will they win or lose this case? Who knows.
Dare I wonder if people here in Scotland banded together to take Nicola Sturgeon to Court in a litigation case, that has caused a great of deal angst and misery, in not being allowed access to Mass and the Sacraments. Notwithstanding all the material pressures due to this lockdown.
Maybe only in my pipe dreams.
Theresa Rose
There’s a much better suing system in American courts because they’ve been suing each other for a lot longer than any other country. Seriously though, I think he will win the case because Cuomo and de Blasio are a couple of persecutors of religion under the guise of Covid-19, two evil men who have apostatised from the faith and now in the service of the devil. I hope he wins and I think he will. If he does then we should be able to take Sturgeon to court for banning religious gatherings while allowing thousands of anarchists to gather for subversive reasons on Glasgow Green. Come to think of it, the Chief Constable of Police Scotland needs suing as well, for double standards if not for subversion. He’ll doubtless be a Mason, which would explain a lot.
Theresa Rose,
Chris Ferrara is one sharp lawyer, so I have no doubt he’ll win. As Athanasius suggests, these two men are Communist ghouls in everything but name.
Last year, Cuomo signed legislation – signed it with a flourish – permitting abortion up to birth, and in April, DeBlasio threatened to arrest all the Orthodox Jews who attended a public funeral, for violating the lockdown, so I’m sure that threat was the reason they sought out Mr. Ferrara.
Yes, in the T wight Zone of the Democrat Party (aka Bolsheviks),, you can riot and loot all you want for “racial justice”(that is, as long as the shoe store has your size), but church services and funerals? Nah, those activities are way too closely associated with Christian civilization, which must be destroyed.
I’m hoping that the satanic leftists have now way overplayed their hand and are pushing massive numbers of people into President Trump’s camp. I include among those massive numbers American Jews, the vast majority of whom inexplicably vote for Democrats.
Apparently American Jews don’t understand that socialism was the banner of Adolf Hitler, as well as the name of his political party.
RCAVictor
Good point about Hitler. He called his Nazi Party the National Socilaist Party, where Socialist is synonymous with Communist. Makes you wonder about all that stuff we hear that Hitler hated Communists. Both the Nazis and Communists were atheistic, both were into Eugenics and both wanted to dominate the world. They had a lot more in common than the history books suggest!
Athanasius,
This is just a guess, but I think Hitler hated the Communists (that is, the Soviets) because he knew they were almost entirely Jews.
RCAVictor
And yet he shared the same totalitarian values, including hatred of Catholicism, with the Communists. It’s a bit of a conumdrum that one!
Conundrum, rather!!
Not knowing anything about Sturgeon, I looked her up on Wikipedia. She is a feminist, believes in gender equality, and she declared a “climate emergency” in 2019 (“She argued that Scotland’s carbon dioxide emissions are irrevocably causing sea levels to rise, which could have a negative impact on Scotland’s prospects of achieving Independence.”)
But you all probably know all that already. I also found that she was well-known for her response to the 2009 swine flu pandemic, article about which contains this little nugget about the WHO:
“In January 2010, Wolfgang Wodarg, a German deputy who trained as a physician and now chairs the health committee at the Council of Europe, claimed major firms had organized a “campaign of panic” to put pressure on the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a “false pandemic” to sell vaccines. Wodarg said the WHO’s “false pandemic” flu campaign is “one of the greatest medicine scandals of the century”. He said that the “false pandemic” campaign began in May 2009 in Mexico City, when a hundred or so “normal” reported influenza cases were declared to be the beginning of a threatening new pandemic, although he said there was little scientific evidence for it. Nevertheless, he argued that the WHO, “in cooperation with some big pharmaceutical companies and their scientists, re-defined pandemics,” removing the statement that “an enormous amount of people have contracted the illness or died” from its existing definition and replacing it by stating simply that there has to be a virus, spreading beyond borders and to which people have no immunity.”
And:
“In June 2010, Fiona Godlee, editor-in-chief of the BMJ, published an editorial which criticised the WHO, saying that an investigation had disclosed that some of the experts advising WHO on the pandemic had financial ties with drug companies which were producing antivirals and vaccines.[116] Margaret Chan, Director-General of the WHO, replied stating, “Without question, the BMJ feature and editorial will leave many readers with the impression that WHO’s decision to declare a pandemic was at least partially influenced by a desire to boost the profits of the pharmaceutical industry. The bottom line, however, is that decisions to raise the level of pandemic alert were based on clearly defined virological and epidemiological criteria. It is hard to bend these criteria, no matter what the motive”.
So let’s all sing it together:
Oh, and her mother’s maiden name was “Ferguson.” Wouldn’t that be interesting if she was related to….Neil Ferguson?
You all have my sympathy but it was Scottish voters who voted Nicola Sturgeon into power. My father, long long ago, was convinced that only those who had a sincere conviction in doing their best for the sake of others, ought to have the right to vote. Being of a certain age should not be the determinant of having the right to vote.. My father was an idealist. The masses contain a very large number of idiots.
Here, in Western Australia we have a very left-wing socialist as our Premier and his approval rating is standing at around 80% because he has driven our State in having almost no lockdown of our freedoms. Our churches are open (up to a limit of 100) and our pubs and clubs have all re-opened for business and the latest argument is over the size of crowds which will be allowed to watch sporting games. The main restrictions which remain are over travel to other States and also being allowed to fly overseas.Parts of Australia are feeling hurt because of restrictions over Tourism.

I have to admit I can’t work out the voting system in Scotland, it’s all very confusing since devolution (I think that’s the plan! ) But I don’t think that a majority of Scots voted SNP (I could be wrong) but the only explanation I’ve ever heard for the SNP being in the lead is that the way the system works, they got most seats but that doesn’t mean most votes. Not sure if that makes sense to the statistics people, but it doesn’t make sense to me, LOL!
I would never vote for them and I can only feel sorry for those who did! I won’t feel sorry for those who would do so again, though – they deserve what’s coming to them!

I am absolutely convinced that the SNP are getting elected by a corrupt postal voting system. Almost everyone I speak to can’t stand the SNP and yet they keep getting voted back in. I’m sure something is amiss with the system, also partly due to voter apathy. The old adage applies again: “evil abounds because good men do nothing”.
I think the SNP will be given a hiding at the next Holyrood election in 2021. They’ve made a mess of the NHS and education, long before lockdown and they’ve made a mess of that, as well, deliberately keeping us in lockdown, step by step, behind England for no good reason. The sooner they’re gone, the better IMHO.
My question is what the alternative to the SNP would be? Labour is dead, the Conservatives are on life support, so who to vote for? I personally cannot abide the SNP and would never, ever vote for them either. However, Sturgeon is a good politician, and even though she has utterly mishandled this flu, she comes over as sympathetic, caring and in control. I know it’s all contrived but, compared to the bumbling PM, she comes over well. I think the SNP will get in next time around as the general populace are incapable of critical thinking.
Crofterlady,
Why would you want to vote when Pope JPII said no Catholic can vote for any system that legalises the murder of the unborn? I find it very sad that too many Catholics want to vote for their bank balance’s sake. It won’t go well for any of us who vote for these murderers – that’s what they are by aiding and abetting the murder of the unborn, either by openly supporting abortion or by their silence. I can’t remember if it’s on another thread or further up this one, but the point was made that if every Catholic spoilt their paper by writing on a message to show why we can’t vote, they would soon get the message.
As for your description of Nicola Sturgeon. I don’t think you’ve been watching the news. She has failed in every single department of government, health, education, to name but two.
You may be right about her being a caring person, but I doubt it. I think she is very insincere – that’s how she comes across to me.
Lily, I didn’t say she was a caring person! Read it again. I said “…she comes over as sympathetic, caring……”
I do pay attention to the News and I know what a terrible job they have done and continue doing; But, everyone I meet sings her praises and believes her glib dishonesty!
As for voting I’m sure I read somewhere that we are expected to vote for the “least bad”. Did one of the popes not say that? Pope Pius 12th?
Crofterlady
I think we are encouraged to vote for the lesser evil when it comes to general policy. However, when it comes to morality we are obliged to not vote for any political party that rejects God’s law. In such cases, if no other option is available, we can spoil our vote by leaving a strong message on the ballot paper. That would still fulfil our duty to vote.
Crofterlady,
So, everyone you meet sings Sturgeon’s praises? And you are surprised at this because…..?
Read GK Chesterton, especially the quote which Athanasius often publishes here: “only dead fish go with the flow”…” Those who still have a working brain, swim against the tide! Well, that last bit was moi, not Chesterton. Bet he would have loved to have thought of it, though… eh?
As for Pius XII – I doubt it would ever have crossed his mind that any Government would legalise the murder of the unborn child. Never mind same-sex “marriage” and laws to allow men to become women and women to become men, just as long as they wanted to do that. That’s Nicola Sturgeon’s policy – none of this looking at the medical, scientific, psychological ramifications of such “transitioning”, none of this, “we’ll go with what the experts tell us…” Oh, no, we keep that for when we want to imprison the population, impose outrageous limits of their civil and religious freedoms, and we’ll trot out the “scientific experts” then. That’ll fool them – again, and again, and again…
Yes, she comes across as sympathetic, caring…” in the judgment of some. Me, I think she should be awarded an Oscar for Best Scottish Actress, EVER…
No, the Pope to look to for how to vote these days, is the Pope who wrote about it AFTER the legalisation of abortion and he said, without any equivocation, that no Catholic should vote for any system that permits the murder of the unborn child. Could not be clearer.
